Hello everyone,
While hiking on the Mallory Cave Trail yesterday, 3/2/2010, I spotted an adult
male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER. Although this species can be expected at other
sites in Boulder County (i.e. Brainard Lake), its occurrence in the immediate
Front Range is quite rare, as far as I can tell. It was foraging in a steep
drainage dominated by Douglas-firs. Many of the trees it was investigating were
damaged in last spring's heavy snowfalls.
In response to David Alcock's post earlier today pertaining to Peregrine
Falcons, it should be noted that there's an active territory a few miles due
west of his observation. Around the county Peregrines are on territory, Golden
Eagles are setting up shop (one nest already incubating) and Bald Eagles are
incubating.
I spent a bit of time squinting at the distant gull flock gathered at Valmont
Reservoir at dusk this evening. Three adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were the
only oddities I could pick out of the huge mass of gulls. There have
consistently been 2-3 adult LBBG's at Valmont recently. It's hard to get exact
counts on the gulls, but it should be noted that the number of HERRING GULLS is
breaching 3-figures. The number of ducks at this site is increasing, with a
noticeable influx of COMMON GOLDENEYE and REDHEADS tonight.
I've also noted the arrival of MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS in the grasslands south of
Boulder. As others have noted, many of the locals are pipping up. Rejoicing in
the warm sunshine, no doubt.
Great birding,
Christian Nunes

P.S. For anyone interested, I've started uploading photos from my recent trip
to South America to my Flickr site (link above). Way too many to come...
