I spoke too soon; the Lewis's Woodpecker is still here...I just saw
him taking peanuts that I put out for the jays and magpies. I wonder
where he's been the last two weeks.  He sure seems happy to be back;
must be refilling his larder as many times as he's visited the feeder!

Speaking of jays, not only are the Blue Jays coming with regularity,
but I've discovered I also have Western Scrub Jays visiting. Looking
at the handsome bird, I have a feeling I've seen him before but
thought I was looking at a 'relaxed' Blue Jay. Perhaps I'm a lazy
birder...or perhaps these new glasses are quite an improvement, but I
think they've been here before and I just didn't SEE how different
they are from the Blues.

And over the weekend, I also saw the White-winged Dove. I can't seem
to get rid of the Eurasian Collareds and notice I hardly ever see
Mourning Doves here any more; are these implants running them off, I
wonder.

All three Rosy-Finches continue to come, though when the weather is
bad there are so many more. Perhaps 100 visited this morning, while
it was closer to 300 all weekend. I think they know what time I toss
out the seed!

On Sunday though, things were pretty calm for the greater portion of
the day, as a Cooper's Hawk sat in a huge Cottonwood overlooking the
yard. He stayed for hours and hours...never did see him try for
lunch, though. This must have been a female, she was quite large. It
was good to have the chance to really look at her and take in the
lighter nape and more rounded tail. Seems she also had very little
white in the last bar of her tail coloring.

Other than that, all the standards abound: nuthatches, chickadees,
creepers, finches (and finally siskins again...where have they been?),
Hairys, Downies, Juncos, the occasional Sparrow or Cassian's Finch and
always Evening Grosbeaks...sometimes as many as 50 at a time. While
the little hawk-types visit often, I've yet to see a Great-horned Owl
this year.

Feel free to give me a call should you be interested in birding my
yard.
