The White-winged Crossbills at Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins (Larimer
County) were seen today continuing to build their nest between 7:45am and 3pm
with a rather lengthy period of "disappearance" from 11:30am to about 2pm. The
nest has to be complete, or nearly so. Singing by the male is becoming very
infrequent (I only heard it once today, and that was brief). See yesterday's
post for information on where to park and stand to protect your person and
property from incoming white, dimpled flying objects originating on the golf
course.

OK, here goes. Today one unnamed birder who has a history of being aloof and
rude to the other crossbill seekers, repeatedly whistled (in a shrill manner)
to the birds when they were on the ground at very close range. He was asked
not to do so by three birders nearby and still persisted at least one more
time. If you are monitoring this listserv and intend to come back to see the
crossbills, please don't do this. I would remind you the crossbills seem to
show no fear of people, and we'd all like to keep it that way. While
parrotlike at times, they are not parrots. They will not, in all likelihood,
fly up and sit on your arm or go home with you. And the cemetery still has
2000 vacant spaces. Thank you.
