Hi all, I was at Snowmass ski area again yesterday, Wednesday, on a warm, sunny, spring-like, bluebird day. "Despite" the gorgeous weather, and the St.Patrick's day revellers, a good flock of Rosy Finches fed continuously for at least 2 hours late morning at the feeder at the top of the Village Express chairlift (at the top of Sam's Knob). There were at least 120 birds, 90% of which were Brown-capped, with just a few Gray-crowns, of which 2 were of the Hepburn's form. The flock included at least 24 color banded birds, the combinations of which I noted in detail.
Other birds I have seen this week include.. Tuesday (with Al Levantin) Ring-billed Gull - adult - Whitewater by Hwy 141 on 1st gravel pit north of rd, west of the river (Mesa County) -- my first gull of any species on the "Western Slope" this winter.. yes still winter - up to 18" snow expected here in next 2 days.. c50 Sandhill Cranes Fruitgrowers reservoir in the morning (Delta County) 10 Cinnamon Teal - Gunnison River - Delta by G rd bridge (Delta County) 120 Sandhill Cranes circling over Escalante Wildlife area (but no sign of the "fictional" Western Screech ) 1 Cinnamon Teal - Colorado River, Grand Junction - just upriver of Redlands Parkway (but no sign of Eurasian Wigeon) Also, a probable River Otter in the Colorado River on east side of Grand Junction.. swam north across river and walked out on bank before disappearing into the vegetation. Whilst I am not 100% sure of the id, if it was a mink then it was doing a very good imitation of a River Otter, because judging it's size compared to the nearby ducks, it was probably the biggest mink ever. IE: It appeared 2x the length of the Common Mergansers.. If anyone wants to follow up on the sighting please email me privately Today, Thursday up to 6 Pinyon Jays at the feeders in our yard Roll on spring.. Good birding all Dick Filby Carbondale, Garfield Co -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds".
