Also posted on RBA. American Three-Toed Woodpecker. Douglas County, 21
March 2010, 11AM. Generally about 5 miles West of Sedalia, CO, on Colorado
Route 67, 0.2 miles East of Rampart Range Road on the north side of CO 67.
N39 22.672, W105 05.330. On the strength of RBA, 11 March, we drove to the
spot and got lucky. Best to park in the snowy lot at Rampart Range Road
where it crosses CO 67 and amble back to the East along the side of the
road There is a lot of excellent habitat: Dead Spruce mixed with dead
Lodgepole Pine. We were able to hear two distinct hammerings. One was very
strong a little further to the East and resulted in two beautiful Hairy
Woodpeckers. But we could also hear some more subtle hammering further back
into the woods and eventually next to the road. Persistence paid off. One
male flew to the South across the road and disappeared. A female continued
to work a tree very near the main road near the power lines where they cross
CO 67 0.2 miles East of the Rampart Range turnoff. Mid-day light was
perfect. The bird was undisturbed by our presence within 15 yards or so.
If you think you might want to step off the road, knee-length gaiters will
be needed. There is no place to pull off the road in the vicinity of our
sighting. Rick Taylor
