What a coincidence - went to Red Rocks Trading Post this morning and
bumped into Mike & Diana King, the couple I sat next to at monday
night's DFO Program ( we all agreed it was an interesting and
informative program). We scattered some seed and within 10 - 15
minutes, the first-winter Golden-crowned appeared at the base of the
old apple tree in the corner of the garden area. In addition to the
Golden-crowned, we observed Western Scrub-Jay, Black-capped Chickadee,
Townsend's Solitaire, American Robin, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow,
House Finch, Pine Siskin, and a large number of Dark-eyed Juncos
including all the subspecies with one White-winged in the bunch.
We then drove to the South Parking lot where we were able to find the
male Peregrine Falcon perched on the cliff wall just north of the
parking lot. There is also a Raven's nest on the cliff face and we
watched the female leave the nest and join the male for a brief period
before returning to the nest. A pretty productive hour of birding
with the Golden-crowned Sparrow, White-winged Junco, and Peregrine
Falcon.
