Hi all,
I briefly birded Fountain Creek Regional Park, Colorado Springs, this morning.
At 8:20 am, I heard a Winter Wren singing. I made some smacking noises and
waited a few minutes. I then saw the wren moving around at the base of
a willow tree with cocked tail. I observed the bird for about 5 minutes. I
believe this bird was of the eastern race - very pale throat that contrasted
with rufous back.
The bird was located at what I believe is the northern part of Woodpecker
alley. If you are at the southern end of South Rice's pond, you have the
option to go right (by the waterfall/dam area) or left under a small gazebo
that blocks the trail. Take the right onto the trail that goes by the
waterfall. At the next fork, take a right (this I believe is Woodpecker alley)
and you will be heading south into a wooded area. You will walk a ways and
come to a green metal bench on the left. If you draw a straight line from the
bench going west across fountain creek to an island with trees along the shore,
this is where the wren was. Before you get to the bench, there is a small
social trail on the right hand side. If you take this and then take a left at
the fork, the bird was heard singing straight across the creek on the island.
It remained very low and secretive. There have been a few Winter Wrens in the
park this past winter.
I wonder how much longer this bird will hang around.
It was fairly cold and quiet otherwise.
Good birding,
