Today at Monte Vista NWR, Jerry Poe, Lisa and I spotted a Mexican duck. It was
a male but it seemed to have a female near him that looked much like a normal
Mallard female. It was seen along the 3E at the Refuge and gave us good
looks.Noticably darker brown bird than a female mallard, with un-mottled green
bill. Lighter than Black Ducks which I grew up with on the east coast. The
ducks were huddled close to the road hiding from the cold nasty winds of late.

On the Auto tour loop there is an adult Tundra Swan, quite unusual for these
parts.

Home Lake is having exceptional birding action currently. Seems there was
winter kill on all the fish, so whats bad for the fish (and us fisher people)
is good for the birds and birders. Bald eagle, ring-billed gulls, Franklin's
Gulls, and other birds seem to be enjoying the bounty.

Man it was COLD out there today!
