Extreme southeast corner, Grandview Cemetery, west end of Mountain Avenue, Fort
Collins, Colorado:

I have good news! There are still two babies in the nest and today all seemed
fairly normal in terms of visitations by the parents. I am very confused as to
what happened on Monday afternoon and yesterday. Apparently the hawk got the
third baby (a runt?) we suspected was there and could never quite see and
yesterday the parents were in a continued state of aggitation over the loss of
one young. I could not believe my eyes when today the parents came in at 8:09
and I could see a nestling head above the nest rim. At the 8:53 feeding, I
clearly saw two large heads, similar to what we were seeing as late as 4pm on
5April.

I appreciate all the comments I've received, most of which bordered on
condolences. These crossbills are resilient and the nesting attempt is not
over yet! I will keep monitoring the situation. Based on this morning, those
wishing to still see, or see again, the crossbills and their young, I'd say
8:30 to 10:30 is a good time.
