Well, I’m tickled, however reluctant, to say that I still have Rosy-
Finches after all. I’ve never had them visit into April before, and
their numbers are both infrequent and fast to come and go. Just a few
dozen come in early in the morning and are gone before nine o’clock.
And they don’t come every day…these visits could be the result of the
little snow we got the other day.

All three varieties are here; mostly Brown-capped with several Gray-
crowned (including a Hepburn’s or two) and a couple Blacks, as well.

The folks who came last Friday missed them…didn’t see a single Rosy-
Finch. For that reason, while I enjoy visitors anytime… I wouldn’t
guarantee a sighting of these birds this late in the season. However,
if you are going to be in the area (very early) in the next (short)
while, feel free to give a call and I’ll give directions… I have no
idea how long this will continue; as I said, I’ve never had them here
in April before.

Also around, besides 100s of Red-winged eating machines and those darn
doves, are dozens of Evening Grosbeaks, Red- and White-breasted
Nuthatches, both Chickadees, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Lesser
Goldfinch (Black-backed) and Am. Goldfinch, Pine Siskins, Juncos and
all the other ‘regulars’…as well as the occasional visit by the White-
winged Dove or some raptor swooping in for lunch.

This just in from Polly Neldner who lives about a mile away, on the
other side of town in a completely different habitat:

“Just an update...we are still getting a few Pinyon Jays each
day...yesterday around 8 showed up at various times. Today it is
snowing...so we could get large numbers again...they tend to come in
larger numbers when the weather is bad. I am sending a copy of this e-
mail to Beverly...she could help you get here.”

So, if you decide to give it a try on a weekend (cuz I work
otherwise), I have permission to take you to their feeders, as well.
Sometimes she has 40-50 of those illusive jays visit...but as you
know actual sightings are hit or miss.

I'm game if you are.
