The Wild Bird Center of Colorado Springs held its first birdwalk of the season
this morinng (7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.). We visited Kettle Creek Lakes, near the
south entrance of the U.S. Air Force Academy and adjacent to the Santa Fe
Trail. There was a stiff and very cold northerly wind blowing, yet we saw a
fair number of birds. The best were the single Western Grebe swimming in one
pond and a pair of Solitary Sandpipers flushed unexpectedly from the shore line
along the dam.

Here is the full list of the birds seen (18 total).

Great Blue Heron
Canada Goose
Mallard
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Western Grebe
Solitary Sandpiper
Belted Kingfisher
American Robins (a great abundance)
Common Grackle
Red-winged Blackbird
Scrub Jay
Gull (probably Ring-billed)
Spotted Towhee
Mountain Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
Eurasian Collared Dove
House Finch or Purple Finch (ID unsure on this bird; it was fairly far away at
the top of a pine tree)

These birds were heard, but not seen: Song Sparrow, Northern Flicker.
