Dear Cobirders,
Another early evening walk around Walden Ponds today just to see what
was different. Nothing unusual today, no Warblers or Shorebirds
(beyond Killdeer). Just before I was about to leave, I was sitting on
the boardwalk waiting for a Marsh Wren, when a Heron flew overhead at
treetop level (~25-30 ft). Something didn't look right, so I watched
it in the binoculars. It was entirely dark purple blue, much smaller
than a Great Blue Heron and much larger than a Green Heron. It had a
bill that was similar in color to the rest of the body (not yellow or
orange-ish) and no white on the neck or head. It flew past and on
towards the ponds at Sawhill. I sped over to Sawhill, but couldn't
find any Heron species at all. Just something to keep an eye out for
if you're walking around Walden.
Cheers,
