Cobirders:
On April 13, 2010, I observed two adult Mourning Doves with two fledglings in
our backyard. Again on the 14th, one fledgling. This evening (April 15), June
and I saw one fledgling with one adult, and I was able to photograph them. All
observations were of birds feeding on the lawn.
Atlas I gives April 30 as the earliest date on which fledglings were observed
in the state during the years covered. Fledging on (or before) April 13 seems
early, but not altogether inconsistent with recent increases in the numbers of
Mourning Doves wintering locally.
