Hi all, I guided Dan Kaspar of Texas around the West Slope yesterday and today. Highlights:
Saturday 4/17 Route 80 near Hayden, Routt County --15 Greater Sage-Grouse displaying --6 Sharp-tailed Grouse coming off a nearby lek (unfortunately a Red-tailed Hawk got there just before we did, so we only saw the birds flushing, not dancing) Escalante Canyon, Delta County --migrants! We found a flock of Virginia's (2), Audubon's, & Orange-crowned Warblers, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and an unidentified Empid. I thought for sure we'd have the first spring reports of Virginia's and Orange-crowned from the state, but it looks like Coen & Brenda tied us, and with birds on territory at that! Since I saw the Virginia's a few seconds before I saw the Audubon's, the Virginia's was my first warbler of the year in Colorado, which has never happened before. --at least 4 Black Phoebes along the stream, two of which may have been paired Escalante SWA gravel pit west of Delta --4 White-faced Ibis (flyover) Grand Mesa, Mesa/Delta Counties --zero crossbills --4 Three-toed Woodpeckers --one Boreal Owl singing spontaneously Sunday 4/18 --Gunnison Sage-Grouse at the Waunita Hot Springs lek Good birding, all-- Nathan Pieplow Boulder -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
