This afternoon I decided to try to see the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron at
Fountain Creek. I showed up at about 4:45 with no Night-Herons visible. At
about 5:30 I observed a singing NORTHERN PARULA in the same location as the
Night-Heron, it was just SE of the pond high up in a tree. Then I finally
decided that since there is no sign of any Night-Herons that I should walk away
from the pond for a while, so I walked back up to my car to put on another
layer as I would stay there the rest of the afternoon until I saw it or it got
dark. Then I turned right back around and when I got to the pond, it was about
6:00, the YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was standing in the same spot that others
previously reported. This was a nice find Kara, thanks for getting word out so
quickly!!
I then decided to go see what was at Big Johnson Reservoir. There was a lot of
birds, but the only 'rarity' that I could find was a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE
very close to shore, it was actually the closest bird to me. One note of
interest was that there was over 1000 (I was estimating somewhere between 1000
and 1200 total) Larus gulls at the lake to roost for the night. I discovered
that all the birds there was California Gulls except for 9 Ring-billed Gulls
and 2 Herring Gulls. I have never seen this many California Gulls in one
location except at a few breeding locations.
