Boulder County:
--A Carolina Wren was reported by Britain on Carolina Ave in Longmont
on April 19. It has not been seen since then.
Delta County:
--A Snowy Plover was reported by Beason at Fruitgrower’s Reservoir on
April 24.
--A GLOSSY IBIS was reported by Kaempfer at Fruitgrower’s Reservoir
on April 24. The bird was at the west end of the causeway.
--A GlOSSY IBIS was reported by Seltman along the east shore of the
lake at Crawford State Park on April 19.
Douglas County/Jefferson County:
--A Yellow-throated Vireo was reported by Kellner at Chatfield State
Park on April 17 and was seen by multiple observers as recently as
April 19. The bird was on the east side of the creek from the Plum
Creek delta parking lot. Walk over the creek on the footbridge SE of
the parking lot and then walk down stream to the last stand of tall
trees before the lake. The bird has also been seen slightly east of
this location and has been loosely associated with a flock of Yellow-
rumped Warblers. Waterproof footwear is suggested.
Eagle County:
--40+ Barrow’s Goldeneye were reported by Filby at Spring Park
Reservoir on April 22, April 23 and on April 24. The reservoir has NO
public
access and is viewable distantly from the road with a scope.
El Paso County:
--A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT -HERON was reported by Lewantowicz at Hansen
Nature Park (southern part of Fountain Creek Regional Park on April
16 and was seen as recently as April 21. From the Hansen Nature Park
parking lot, take a small social trail that goes north through the
woods. When you reach the marsh, you will notice two fallen down
willow trees on your left (and a gigantic willow tree straight ahead
at the edge of the trail). If you look west across the water to the
opposite bank, the heron was standing in the reeds.
--A Northern Parula was reported by Wild in the same location as the
Yellow-crowned Night Heron on April 19.
--A Broad-winged Hawk was reported by Pals at Fountain Creek Regional
Park on April 24.
--A male Hooded Warbler was reported by Percival at Holmes Grove at
Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) on April 16 and was found again on April
17. A male Hooded Warbler was reported by Brown and banded by RMBO at
Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) on April 19 and was seen again on April
21 and April 22.
--A male Northern Parula was reported by Percival at the Casita at
Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) on April 16, 17 and 19th. A male Northern
Parula was reported by Gobris at the banding station on April 23 and
April 24.
--A female Barrow’s Goldeneye was reported by Wild at Big Johnson
Reservoir on April 19.
--A Broad-winged Hawk was reported by Burns at Sondermann Park on
April 24. The bird was in the tall cottonwoods to the west of the
beaver dam area.
Fremont County:
--A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported by Miller at Tunnel Drive in
Canon City on October 20, 2009 and was last reported by Percival on
April 19, 2010. The bird was seen west of the gate with the no
parking sign.
--White-winged Doves were reported by Peterson building a nest in
Florence on April 21.
Jefferson County:
----A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported by Brown behind the Trading
Post at Red Rocks on December 19, 2009.. The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW
was last reported by Filby on April 21.
--2 Broad-winged Hawks were reported by Slingsby at the RMBO Dinosaur
Ridge Hawkwatch on April 20. Three Broad-winged Hawks were reported
there by Hundertmark on April 22.
Kit Carson County:
--A Broad-winged Hawk was reported by Wood in Burlington on April 23.
Larimer County:
--A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported by Elens on an obscure
pond off Blue Spruce Dr. (e. side of the rd.) and Willox on April 20
and was seen again by Hopper on April 21. The pond is visible from
Blue Spruce Dr. looking east across an empty field directly across
from a brown warehouse called CPP.
--An Eastern Phoebe was reported by Coley at the south side of the
diversion dam on the Big Thompson River (a bit NW of Marker 2) on
April 14 and on April 19.
Mesa County:
--A Harris’s Sparrow was reported by Tischbein at Connected Lakes on
April 19, about 50 yards west of the restrooms where the little stream
crosses the walk.
Montrose County:
--An Indigo Bunting was reported by Dexter in Nucla on April 22.
--2 Black Phoebes were reported by Dexter in Nucla on April 22 and
April 23.
Ouray County:
--A Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch was reported by Nelson at his feeders in
Ouray on April 23.
Prowers County:
Lamar Community College:
--A male Northern Parula was reported by Leatherman at the LCC Woods
on April 21. The bird was moving but was last seen in the wet part of
the north end .
--3 Northern Cardinals (2 males and one female) were reported by
Leatherman singing at both ends of the LCC Woods on April 21. One male
Northern Cardinal was reported by Leatherman at the north end of the
woods on April 22. Of note, the Northern Cardinal at LCC is fighting
with a "rival" (its own image in the rearview mirrors of cars parked
east of the building north of the Library). It seems to have staked
out a territory in this area, and despite roaming widely, returns to
it regularly. It typically sings a different song than the male at the
south end of the woods.
--A Carolina Wren was reported by Leatherman singing at both ends of
the LCC Woods on April 20. The bird was at the south end on April 21.
--A Red-bellied Woodpecker was reported by Leatherman at the LCC Woods
on April 20 and on April 22.
--2 Harris’s Sparrows were reported by Leatherman at the LCC Woods on
April 22.
--An Indigo Bunting was reported by Leatherman at LCC just north of
the tennis courts, west of the road on April 22.
--A KENTUCKY WARBLER, a Nashville Warbler (eastern), and a Northern
Parula were reported by Stulp about 5 miles south of Lamar on April 22.
--A Nashville Warbler (eastern) was reported by Leatherman at
Fairmount Cemetery on April 22.
--At least 5 White-winged Doves were reported by Leatherman visiting a
feeder in Willow Creek Subdivision east of Willow Creek Park on April
20.
--Harris’s Sparrows have been present at the Paulsen’s Yard in
Lamar (2 on April 20 and 21; 4 on April 23).
--A Harris’s Sparrow was reported by Leatherman at Higbee SWA on
April 22.
Pueblo County:
--A Yellow-throated Vireo was reported by Silverman below the dam at
Lake Beckwith in Colorado City on April 24.
--A Northern Parula (female) was reported by Percival at Greenhorn
Meadows Park in Colorado City on April 24.
--A GLOSSY IBIS was reported by Percival at the North Picnic Road loop
at Pueblo Reservoir on April 23.
--A Black-throated Gray Warbler (adult male) was reported by Percival
at Pueblo City Park on on April 22. The bird was on the west side of
the park, above the creek in the Frisbee Golf Course area.
--A Black-throated Gray Warbler was reported by Percival just west of
the Pueblo Nature Center in tall cottonwoods on April 24.
--A White-winged Dove was reported by Percival at Pueblo Reservoir
(flying over the water) on April 22.
Weld County:
--A GLOSSY IBIS (adult) was reported by Prather at Union Reservoir on
April 23 and was seen along the north shore by Nunnes on April 24 .
The DFO Monthly Meeting will be held at 7:30PM on Monday, April 26, at
the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in the Ricketson Auditorium.
Nathan Pieplow will present “A Refresher Course on Calls and Songs of
Avian Spring Migrants. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Park on the north side of the Museum and walk around and enter through
the Museum's west door. Plan to arrive by 7:15 p.m.; DOORS OPEN BY
7:00 AND ARE LOCKED AT 7:30 P.M. If late, you can enter through the
security /volunteer door, but this does create problems for our hosts
at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
The DFO field trip for Sunday, April 25 is to McCabe Meadows Park,
formerly Parker Regional Park, and is led by Steve Kennedy
(303-815-9738). Meet at 0730 for ½ day trip. From Main Street
intersection in
Parker, take Highway 83 south for 1.2 miles. Turn right on Indian Pipe
Lane to the parking lot on the right. (The park is on the west side of
the road). Wear your walking shoes – we’ll go rain or shine. We
may look into Triple C Ranch’s marsh and pond.
