I treated myself to a couple hours of birding at Running Deer Natural Area and along the Poudre River trail just north of Prospect Road in Fort Collins this morning. Nothing especially rare, but lots of species (60 total) and quite birdy overall. Highlights include
2 Broad-winged Hawks 2 Forster's Terns Western Grebes Great-tailed Grackle Yellow-headed Blackbirds Bullock's Oriole 4 Lincoln's Sparrows 2 Clay-colored Sparrows Swainson's Thrush Northern Rough-winged Swallow White-faced Ibis Long-billed Curlew nesting Osprey Marsh Wrens galore Green Heron scads of Yellow-rumped Warblers Virginia Rail (heard and seen) Sora Killdeer with an adorable scruffy chick in tow Chimney Swifts I ran into Joe Mammoser on the Poudre Trail who told me of a Northern Waterthrush hanging out in a brushy spot near the trail by the office building just north of Prospect Road. He said it was singing and calling when he arrived, but it was quiet by the time I got there (late morning). This was where I saw the Killdeer chick. I so love this time of year. -- Eric DeFonso Fort Collins, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
