This past Friday, May 14, I toured around the park to find it full of
migrants...hundreds of sparrows of 7 species, a couple of hundred
yellow-rumped warblers, etc. You could drive slowly and "kick up" 50 or 60
chippings at once. Somewhat fewer numbers were there on 5/15. Larry Modesitt
was with me on about half of the trip, as we met at several sites.
But today, same area (perhaps a little less), I encountered one song sparrow
and one lark sparrow. It was as if someone had taken a broom and swept the
sparrows from the park.
This is a striking example of what we see in spring migration...a gap in the
packets of birds migrating.
So it seems appropriate to call it a wipeout, the opposite of fallout.
It's warm tonight, so I can hope for warblers and thrushes and, finally, a
flycatcher (besides Say's phoebes and western kingbirds) push.
