Hello, Birders.

I visited Gregory Canyon early this morning, Sunday, May 30th.

In the hour before dawn, I heard a weakly singing Common Poorwill and a wildly
singing Northern Saw-whet Owl.

I also heard a nice low, loud flight call that sounded like an American
Redstart...and then I actually saw an American Redstart (looked like an adult
female) about a half hour sunrise. Coulda (might well have been) a coincidence,
but it's fun to think I heard the bird flying in for a landing before dawn.

A few Swainson's Thrushes and Wilson's Warblers were still present, and I heard
a singing Hammond's Flycatcher. I think the flycatcher might have been a
breeder, not a migrant; despite the (relatively) low elevation, a few Hammond's
do seem to spend the summer down in Gregory Canyon.

As I was on my way out, I bumped into Eric Zorawowicz and David Ely, and we
came upon a fascinating pair of wood-pewees. More on those in a follow-up post,
so hang on a sec...
