I did a little birding in Saquache County on a detour back from a meeting in Grand Junction to Salida for another meeting. I heard a number but only saw a few Evening Grosbeaks over several blocks of the small town of Saquache. Also there were good numbers of Pine Siskins--I suspect they bred in the large conifers there but didn't have time to look for immatures.
I made a quick visit to the edges of Russell Lakes SWA (closed for waterfowl nesting until July, the nature trail is open but I didn't have time for it either) where I saw 2 Black-crowned Night-Herons, each being escorted out of territories belonging to resident blackbirds. I also saw an American Bittern fly about 50 yards from one part of the great wetlands areas to another in this very productive state wildlife area. In the marshy and wet meadow areas there were lots of Yellow-headed Blackbirds, a species seen in many areas of the San Luis Valley in very good numbers. n Lots of Brewer's Blackbirds likely nesting here too. Also saw two Cinnamon Teal, several Redheads and other ducks that are nesting in some of the areas.
