It certainly appears to me that the population of Wood Ducks has greatly expanded in Boulder County the last few years. Today I was actually shocked to see a male on Coot Lake, Boulder's dog heaven. It was early evening, hot as the dickens, with a million furry jumping, swimming, fetching beasts, including my three, in what is a quite small pond. The Wood Duck was not even that far from shore and appeared to be non-plussed by all the activity. Several years ago Coot Lake sported a very vocal, frequently visible Am Bittern in the marshy W end.
