Hello, Birders.

A few notes from around Boulder County yesterday, Sunday, June 20th:

1. At Walden Ponds, Lonnie Frye and I thought we were in the bayou or
something. Everything is so lush and green and wet at Walden. We saw a
Peregrine Falcon at sunrise, and we heard an American Bittern a bit earlier.
Otherwise, it was a typical summer morning there, with a braying Pied-billed
Grebe, a roosting Osprey, a Sora counter-singing with a Virginia Rail (Lonnie
said it was forbidden love), at least 5 Great Horned Owls, dawn-singing Western
Wood-Pewees aplenty, Western Warbling-Vireos in the treetops, Bank Swallows at
a colony, and so forth.

2. Atop nearby Gun Barrel Hill, Lonnie and I saw a Burrowing Owl, easily
visible from Lookout Road. Look for the bird from the pull-off on the north
side of Lookout Road, pretty much at the high point between 75th Street and
95th Street. Here's where the pull-off is: 40.072768N, 105.155704W. Stay by the
road; you're not allowed to enter the open space on the north side of Lookout
Road. It is okay to poke around the open space on the south side of Lookout
Road, however, and that's what Lonnie and I did, and what we experienced there
was surround-sound Grasshopper Sparrows. We heard at least 6 Grasshopper
Sparrows in our short time there, and there are surely many more in the
great-looking habitat south of Lookout Road.

3. After sundown, I found a Barn Owl just flying around the residential
neighborhood immediately west of Greenlee Preserve.
