I was able to take time out of my busy schedule at the Sturgis Rally
to swing by Spearfish Canyon this past thursday morning (8/12). The
Orange-billed Nightingale Thrush mentioned a couple of weeks ago is
pretty uncooperative, but still present, right at the trailhead called
'Iron Creek.' It had been around that morning since 5:45 am. I saw
it at 7:30 am. Someone told me this is the third record in the U.S.,
and the second one was a window-kill. Don't know if that's official.
The bird has an insanely bright orange bill, inside and out, even in
the shadows. Might be worth one's drive.
