The Birds of Prey Foundation is asking for your assistance this year in
locating staging areas and kettles of Swainsons Hawks. In the first few
weeks of September we release all of the hawks we have that are fit to
migrate. Most of these are young and inexperienced birds and we like to
release
them into the groups that are forming out on the eastern plains preparing to
leave on their journey south. Finding these groups can be like finding a
needle in a haystack, but we feel it greatly increases the success and
survival rate for our rehabilitated birds to join up and spend time in these
groups before beginning their journey. The groups should start gathering in
the next few weeks, with the juveniles arriving first, followed by the
adults. It will be anywhere from 20 to 100 hawks together, mostly on the
ground feeding on grasshoppers, with some other birds flying or perching
overhead. They seem to prefer recently plowed, cut or planted fields and will
sometimes stay on one area for days. If you haven't seen this spectacle, it
is worth the drive! Please notify us immediately at (303) 466-4620 or
_fuze...@aol.com_ (mailto:fuze...@aol.com) if you come across a group, with a
specific location that we could access. If you find one and report it, you
will be welcome to join us to witness the release. Happy birding!!
