While waiting for some wonderful children in the environmental group Earth
Guardians to testify at the EPA hearings on coal fly ash yesterday at the
Hyatt Hotel (17th & Welton,) a Kestrel flew up against the window a few
times and appeared to land on the ledge on what would be the southeast
facing side, on the 38th floor. There is an indented ledge on that floor
that goes all around the building; tyhe rest of the building is
flat-walled. It was about 6:30 PM and it did not fly out again, so maybe
it was roosting there. I had just read an article about Kestrels nesting
in south facing cornices on old buildings in east coast cities, so it was
interesting. I have seen Peregrines a number of times in downtown Denver,
and Kestrels in parks or trees in downtown, but this is the first time I
have seen one on one of the skyscrapers. -Elena Klaver, Niwot
