At the annual RMBO picnic last Saturday, three members of the Colorado birding
community were recognized for their contributions to the study of birds in
Colorado.
The Levad Award, established in memory of Rich Levad, was awarded to Hugh
Kingery. The award recognizes a person who, like Rich in his incredibly
productive
lifetime, has provided distinguished service to the ornithological community,
made scholarly contributions to the field of ornithology and/or have enthused
others about conserving birds and their habitats through
sharing their personal knowledge and experience. Hugh certainly more than meets
all of these standards.
RMBO also established a new award to recognize an outstanding RMBO volunteer.
The award was named in honor of Nelda Gamble who was RMBO's first Bald Eagle
Watch Coordinator. After 20 years as the coordinator, Nelda turned that role
over to two other volunteers in 2009. She continues to support their efforts.
In addition to her role in Bald Eagle Watch, Nelda was deeply involved in
RMBO's early education programs. She remains a wealth of knowledge about RMBO's
history.
The first Nelda Gamble Award was presented to Paul Slingsby. Paul was a long
time director of RMBO and chair of the Board of Directors. He was one of the
volunteers who put in long hours to restore the Old Stone House, the historic
farm house that now serves as RMBO's headquarters. Over the years he and his
good friend, Jim Duggan, have continued to work on maintaining and improving
the Stone House. Paul is also an active volunteer in Colonywatch, monitoring
colonial water birds in North Park. Last year he was among the most active of a
handful of birders reinvigorating the Dinosaur Ridge Raptor Migration Station.
