Hi Birders,
Activity continues to be slow – new birds banded again in the low teens. After
a couple of “sparrow” days, we returned, probably only briefly, to the
majority of new birds being warblers.
The excitement of the morning was capturing a Winter Wren, probable Eastern by
plumage. I’ve got a few photos if anyone is interested – just send me an
e-mail. We caught him at the same time as a House Wren (pretty strange, as it
was our first House Wren in a week), so we took some time to enjoy the
differences – it is hard to make a HOWR look big, but the WIWR makes it look
like a pale giant! The WIWR’s tail is so short that I at first thought it was
still growing in.
We actually caught the WIWR twice; in 2 different nets near the road, on the
left just before you get to the banding station.
Here’s the full breakdown for the day:
Hammond’s Flycatcher 1
House Wren 1
Winter Wren 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 5
Audubon’s Warbler 1
Wilson’s Warbler 1
We are open every day this week EXCEPT Wednesday. We have groups Tues and
Thurs, so Mon and Fri will be good, quiet days to visit.
