I observed the Red-necked Grebe at about 9:30 a.m. at the Cottonwood Creek pond, across from the model airplane field at CCSP. He was conveniently located at the near shore, not too far from the parking pullout. The bird appears to have suffered an injury. There is a flap of skin and feathers hanging on the right side of his bill, seemingly torn from his chin. At first it looked like a fish stuck in his bill, but on closer examination, I could see a dark non-feathered area on his chin. He seemed to be swimming, diving, and, hopefully feeding normally. I didn't see him fly. Maybe someone with some wildlife rehab experience could check him out ?
