Hi all,
On sunday,10/9 I did a little birding at Prewitt in addition to some Botany
observations. I did not have alot of time and I primarily went to the south
end, looking for shorebirds. It was windy.
The best bird was an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER. This bird and all the other
shorebirds were seen in a large cove, which is the first cove west of the canal
inlet.
The bird was sort of near Long-billed Dowitchers, but was in a drier mud
habitat, than the Dowitchers. The Dowitchers were in water feeding and the
Plover was not associating with the Dowitchers. The bird was a bit smaller and
daintier than a Black-bellied Plover. The neck was much thinner and narrower
than that of a Black-bellied Plover. The bird had an obvious whitish/buffy
supercilium that stood right out and the bird's bill was smaller than that of a
Black-bellied Plover. Overall the bird's color was buffy. It was doing the
obvious Plover type feeding.
There were at least 122 Long-billed Dowitchers in a migrating flock, 3 Western
Sandpipers, 13-15 Baird's Sandpipers, 1 Least Sandpiper, 5 [ late] Stilt
Sandpipers, 6 Greater Yellowlegs, 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, and 1 lone American
Avocet.
2,[ late] Snowy Egrets
Barn Swallows were everywhere low over the water
1 Osprey flying over the lake
There were many, many, many American Pipits along the shoreline
I couldn't make a Sabine's Gull out of the other gulls present, but I was only
in one part of the reservoir.
I saw and heard 1 House Wren [this was my big songbird count]
Happy Birding!
