On an afternoon outing with a friend from Texas, I went to Boulder Reservoir
and
found three scoters. Initially, I assumed these were the Black Scoters
previously reported, but in reality these were three SURF SCOTERS. All birds
displayed the double white spots on the face, but nothing on the back of the
head. These were distinctly NOT white-winged scoters based on the bill shape
being a right triangle instead of a widened isosceles triangle (look it up if
you don't know). Those were the best birds of the evening, no different gulls
(two Californias, the rest ring billeds), and no loons. Right before dusk we
were leaving around the west side of the reservoir when we encountered four
Great Horned Owls. Nice to get great looks at some owls in the fading light.
Quite pleased when one individual flew right in next to us. Nice evening to go
birding. Hope the scoters stick around.
