On Thursday morning, Oct. 21, a lone juvenile sandhill crane fed in
the winter wheat field west of our home. At the same time a great
blue heron perched on a dead cottonwood not far away. They both flew
off while I was fiddling with a camera; my husband did get good pix.
We both stayed near the house, not approaching the crane. Just before
sunset that day a great blue heron flew west to east past our home,
closely followed by a crane. We were gone most of the day yesterday &
didn't see the crane. This morning just after sunrise a lone crane
(same one???) again landed in the wheat field briefly but flew off
again very quickly.
We're a bit bemused by the crane's behavior. On Thursday it almost
seemed as though he were trying to bond with the heron. If the crane
got separated from its parents or flock, is it possible that it might
try to hang out with a different species of similar size????? Will it
be able to find its way south by itself???
