Several years ago I saw a Golden Eagle stoop on a feeding flock of Greater
Sandhills at the Monte Vista NWR, during the Crane Festival in March. It
came in like a rocket, struck a crane in the standing flock, landed about 20
feet away, then hopped/flew back to dispatch and consume its prey. The
sandhill flock settled back down and went back to feeding, leaving an open
circle of about 50-foot diameter around the eagle.
