This afternoon I observed about 12 gulls quite high in the sky, about
as high as nighthawks forage. They were seemingly randomly flying at a
medium pace with some flapping and some gliding. I don't think there
were thermals and the flight did not seem to suggest they were just
catching thermals to make progress in a general direction. They stayed
in the same general area over my home for 15 minutes. The nearest lake
is about 2 miles away.
They were so high that I could not get any field markings besides the
usual black under wing-tips with white near the very tip. They were
silent too.

So were they hawking insects or just fooling around?
Is this more likely to be one species than the other?

Thanks
Ron Bolton
