I checked the Christmas Bird Count data for Colorado, and the record number of
Williamson's Sapsuckers for a Colorado CBC is three on the Penrose CBC in Dec
2004. If just some of these birds hang out for December 19th, and can be
found, it will be a new record total. The Penrose CBC seems to be the count in
Colorado that have the best chance to get all three species of Colorado
sapsuckers on it, in a day, last year, there was one of each found. I wonder
if a Red-breasted Sapsucker will ever show up in Colorado, if it does, it might
be in Canon City (aka Sapsuckerville) or Florence (since this town seems to be
very good for odd things, like Inca Dove, Summer Tanager, Varied Thrush, among
others on the previous Penrose CBCs). Last year on Christmas Bird Counts in
the Untied States, there were a total of 32 Williamson's Sapsuckers found on 19
counts. If someone has their latest Christmas Bird Count magazine handy, they
can check what the
National High for this species is, I assume it would be for some CBC in
Arizona.
