I did some gulling around Cherry Creek today. An adult Mew Gull and 2 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls were hanging around on the east side. There are now many more Herring Gulls than were there last week and far fewer California Gulls. The variability of Herring Gulls never ceases to amaze me. I encourage you to go look at them to appreciate the individual differences. We're all into gulling now, right? I also found a bird that looks to me like a 1st cycle Glaucous-wing x Herring Gull hybrid. The bird is about as large and bulky as the largest Herring Gull, but has a smudgy looking gray-brown mantle. The scapulars look GWGU-like but the wings look like neither GWGU nor HERG. It has a large dark bill and blocky looking head. I first saw the bird flying around the SE cove, but saw it later on the ice extending from the swim beach. I took a few photos that are available for viewing at the link below. Also, there is a Black-tailed Gull-looking, 3rd/4th cycle California Gull with a large black tail band flying around out there. If you can put McGillivray Warbler eye arcs on it, please call me.
