Hi all,
Doug Kibbe contacted me to say he had 2 loons at Marston Reservoir on 12/6,
[he thought they appeared to be juv. Pacific Loons]. I checked the reservoir
today and finally found 2, ad. Pacific Loons, which were a bit closer to
shore[found near the south end, from Bow Mar Dr.]
Perhaps these were the loons Doug saw or maybe these were new ones on the lake.
Whatever, the birds seem to be far out in the water, at this point. Seen from
the west or east side of Marston.
I've been checking Marston reservoir and surrounding lakes the last 2 weeks.
At Marston reservoir [Denver County] :
>From 11/29-12/6 On 12/1, I counted up to 600 Common Mergansers and stopped
>counting at 600, but there were more. I saw 1, m. and 2, f. Red-breasted
>Mergansers in with the Common on, 12/1. The Common slowly grew in numbers from
>11/16 on, to beyond 600 in numbers.
11/27-12/7 showed the following birds at Marston :
At least 18 Common Goldeneye
20 Hooded Merganser
Western Grebes
Horned Grebes
2 Eared Grebes
1, Common Loon
Canada Geese, [Cackling included]
Gadwall
Green-winged Teal
the other common dabbling ducks
Redhead, 21
Lesser Scaup,
Ruddy Duck
2, ad. Bald Eagle on the west side in Cottonwoods
HENRY Lake which is on W. Quincy ,about 1 mile west of Quincy and S. Wadsworth.
[Jefferson county] 11/18th :
I counted 100 Hooded Mergansers and stopped at that count number, because there
were so many Geese blocking my view. I know there were many more. This is a
very small lake. The Hooded rapidly disappeared from Henry Lake from 11/19 on.
I wondered if this lake was a major migration stop over point for these Hooded
Mergansers.
FORT Logan Cemetery/Denver : 11/29-12/7
1, f. Greater Scaup
8, Lesser Scaup
Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Dabblers, and Geese. All the above are at the
furthest east pond at the cemetery
Happy Birding !
