Hello! I live in the Green Mountain area of Lakewood on a typical neighborhood block, (not backing into Green Mountain or near a field or anything), and last night, (December 9, 2010), there was a tiny owl on our back porch. It was about the size of two baseballs stacked on top of each other and it was sitting on the kitchen window sill facing some fitzer bushes. It was fairly calm, allowing me to open the back door to get a better look.
It had no tufts, large white-ringed eyes, no eye brows, brown streaked feathers, a white-ish patch on it's chest, and sort of pale legs. After a little while, it flew into the fitzer bushes, (and there's mice in those bushes), and it stared down at the ground for a while before flying away. I'm not too familiar with owls but it seems like the flammulated is the closest choice based on size and locale. But it also looked very similar to a Boreal. Any thoughts?
