I want to thank nine birders who ventured out to Sterling -- Andy, Ann, Bill, Bruce, Kathy, Maggie, Peter, Tim and Tom. They all contributed to make this year's Sterling CBC very productive. Although the results are preliminary, we tied the high species count of 73. Two birds were new to the count circle. The best bird was a Greater Prairie Chicken -- Yeah, the barren sand hills on the east side of the count circle finally produced something. Bruce Bosley and Peter Walker got good looks at the bird perched on a wire before it flew off overhead. And the Double Crested-Cormorant first seen by Bill Kaempfer on his blitzkrieg scouting run last Saturday was still on North Sterling Reservoir.

There was a monumental change in the numbers geese observed this year which I assume may be caused by all the open water. We seldom see Snow and Ross's Geese in this circle. The numbers for Snow Geese will probably exceed 5000 and the Ross's Geese will total in the hundreds. And on the other hand we may have record low numbers of Horned Larks.

I hope this may be an indication that we can expect may more good CBC's this year.
