Someone mentioned I shouldn't keep it a secret how many Evening
Grosbeaks I have in my yard these days. While it's been said La Veta
is
becoming the 'sure bet' for these pretty birds, my yard has usually
has
at least a few. While I've mentioned many times about the Rosy-
Finches,
apparently I've not mentioned that this time of year I generally have
as
many as 75 Evening Grosbeaks in my yard at the same time.

I never thought it was a big deal...till someone mentioned I should
say
something and I remembered someone once came here just for these
Grosbeaks. So there ya have it: we have lots of EVGRs in LaVeta...and
as many as 75 at a time in my yard right now.

While the Rosy-Finches are nearly a month late due to the lack of
snow...the Grosbeaks are here anyway; in case you've a hankering to
see
them. Of course, I'll let you know when the Rosies arrive, too...and
those numbers get up to the 5-600s.

This month, so far, my yard count includes:

White-throated Sparrow 1-3, Red-tailed Hawk 2, Cassin's Finch 1-3,
Chipping Sparrow 1, Mourning Dove 1-2, Common Raven 1-30,
White-breasted Nuthatch 1-3, European Starling 5-55,
American Crow 1-25, Downy Woodpecker 1-2, Red-winged
Blackbird 5-55, American Goldfinch 3-15, Dark-eyed Junco:
Slate-colored, Pink Sided, Gray Headed, Oregon, 5-20,
White-winged Dove 1-2, Blue Jay 2-6, Hairy Woodpecker 1-2,
Mountain Chickadee 2-4, Evening Grosbeak 5-75,
Pine Siskin 3-25, Common Grackle 1-15, American Robin 1-3,
Black-capped Chickadee 2-4, Northern Flicker: Red-shafted 1-3,
Black-billed Magpie 1-12, House Finch 3-15, House Sparrow 3-5,
Eurasian Collared-Dove 10-40.

My neighbors (the Neldner's: Polly Wren and Paul) have most of the
birds
I do this month, PLUS: a Hermit Thrush (I've only seen 'em here in
Oct-Nov), Pinyon Jays by the dozens (I got a couple...once) , a
Harris's
Sparrow, Eastern Towhee, Northern Parula, Song Sparrows, and a Fox
Sparrow (Red).

Yeah, this is a good place to visit. Yesterday on the Spanish Peaks
Christmas Bird Count, we got Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Red-tailed
and
Rough-legged Hawks, a Great Horned Owl, over half a dozen Lewis's
Woodpeckers, lots of Chickadees including 77 Mtn Chickadees,
White-breasted and Pygmy Nuthatches, Brown Creepers, American Dippers,
Mtn Bluebirds, nearly a dozen Spotted Towhees, White-winged Doves and
of
course dozens and dozens of the Evening Grosbeaks.

Call for a visit: Beverly Jensen ((719)989-1398) ) and I'll let ya
know
if the Neldner's will be around.
