Just a brief follow-up on Mike Henwood's post about Rosy Finches at the trading post bird feeder. My wife and I stood on the balcony from 1:30 to 2:00 and also saw the Golden-crowned Sparrow and the Harris's Sparrow. Missed the White-throated that Mike saw. I can confirm all three species of Rosy Finch though I only saw one Brown-capped (female) and one Black (also female). When you go check out the cliffs immediately to the south, check out the holes and crevices. We saw a dozen Rosy Finches resting there. As we got in the car to leave I glimpsed the flock of Rosy Finches taking off and bouncing around the sky and estimate their numbers at between 25 and 30. Not bad for 30 minutes. *Five* new Jefferson County species for me, with the Curve-billed Thrasher and White-throated Sparrows still future possibilities!
My wife Micki (married two months yesterday) is a novice birder but a terrific spotter. She saw "a large bird" fly up to the big rock to the southeast. It took me about three minutes to get on the bird. A Prairie Falcon (!) which looked small at that distance. Our first "serious" date was Feb 1 2010, first to see Evening Grosbeaks (glimpsed poorly) and then "the" Snowy Owl. Her friends accuse her of faking an interest in birds but it sure seems genuine to me. For a beginner, she has seen a remarkable number of rare/unusual birds. Don't forget to take seed when you go. It won't last long in this weather. Thanks, Mike. Bob Shade -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
