The cold snap and light snow has brought our Pinyon Jays back 40 to 50+ at a
time. I have lost the telephone number of the birder from up north who
wanted to photograph the jays...so if you read this feel free to call and
come down!
The Harris's Sparrow has been coming in daily - always very early in the
morning and after most of the birds have left in the afternoon
The pair of White-winged Doves has continues to show up daily
We have a record number of Cassin's Finches coming in...up to 10 at a
time...hard to keep track of them all as they move around so much...but
there is one with a distinct yellowish coloring. I know this can occur in
House Finches...has anyone ever hear of this happening in Cassin's Finches?
2 Song Sparrows visit daily...but rarely at the same time...their
coloration is much different...one is much "brighter" than the other...they
must both be "intergrades" as one sort of looks like a Pacific Northwest
bird and the other is closer Adult Eastern...more boldly patterned and less
gray.
2 White crowned Sparrow showed up today - both first winter
4 Spotted Towhees are here
6 to 8 Blue Jays are coming in regularly
Lots of American Goldfinch, Pine Siskins and all races of dark-eyed Juncos
4 Downy Woodpeckers
1 Hairy Woodpecker
House Finch numbers were way down until this last storm...now we have red,
orange and yellow
4 Mountain Chickadees and several Black-capped Chickadees
2 White-breasted Nuthatches
2 Eurasian Collared Doves
We have seen the White-throated Sparrow on the property...but it appears to
have stopped coming the feeders
Evening Grosbeaks continue to come, but oddly their numbers dropped with the
latest weather...down to around 20-30 of these
We continue to hear a Hermit Thrush calling on the property...odd at this
time of year, but we have been unable to locate the bird...not for want of
trying
A great Horned Owl is on the property
