Hi all,

Just wanted to thank everyone that commented on my screech owl question. As it
turn out the little owls are as uncommon as I had thought.

Owls in general are not easy to located, for the most part. However, with a
little practice identifying habitat type and vocalization, it can be done.

Last September, I was in Laporte at a friends house. I told him that his yards
was perfect Eastern Screech Owl habitat. We set up a few Mist Nets and
broadcasted the birds call. Even before dark we had a bird calling back to
the tape. Just after dark we caught and banded a screech owl. He had never
seen nor heard screech owls in his yard, or neighborhood prior.

I set up the nets again in early November and caught the same bird again.

In 2001 I released two Eastern Screech Owls a few blocks from the Elks Lodge in
Boulder. In 2008 one was found dead in the yard of the Elks lodge. These birds
don't have a very large territory, so if you hear one, your not far from its
nest site.
