While driving home in the dark last night at 8:15pm, along Wolfensberger Road west of Castle Rock, a small owl flew across the road in front of my vehicle. Total viewing time was about 2 seconds, so a positive ID and seeing field marks was nearly impossible, especially while driving and avoiding Mule Deer along the road. However, given the geographic distributions of small owls in Colorado and this part of Douglas County, the most likely ID would be Northern Saw-whet Owl, followed distantly by Northern Pygmy-Owl or one of the Screech-Owls.
Alas, the ID of this diminutive denizen of the darkness will forever be uncertain.
