January 2010 Field Trips
Sunday, January 23 Cherry Creek State Park
Leader: Mary Keithler, 303 771-1421. Meet at 0830 at the marina for 1/2
day trip; lunch is optional. Bring scopes for "far-out" waterbirds and
treetop hawks scanning for prey. Parks pass required.
Saturday, January 29 South Platte Park – Carson Nature Center
Leader: Ed Holub 303-979-2194. Meet at 0800 at Nature Center parking lot,
(north of Mineral Avenue, 1 block west of Santa Fe Drive, behind Aspen
Grove shopping center.) Raptors and waterfowl plus winter visitors and
permanent
residents at the Center's feeders.
Sunday, January 30 Birds of Prey Driving Tour
Leader: Kathanne Lynch 303-968-4750. 10:00am – 1:00pm Auto carpool loop
tour from Lagerman Reservoir near Longmont. Register with leader before
Thursday, January 27. Limited to 20 participants or 5 cars.
Join us for a driving tour focusing on raptors. We will be led in the field
by Sue Cass, coordinator of Boulder County Nature Association‘s (BCNA)
Winter Raptor Survey. Emphasis will be on field identification. Habitat,
ecology
and breeding strategies will also be discussed. Historical and count data
for the Survey is on www.bcna.org in Publications and Research. Please bring
lunch, drinking water, and binoculars. Also bring a bird field guide,
spotting scope, and a two-way radio if you have one. No fee. Optional donation
to
BCNA is welcomed. Trip is weather-dependent. Physically accessible.
