Glen Walbek, Joey Kellner, others and I looked through the many gulls at
Cherry Creek this AM. Most of them were loafing around two pools
of open water on the east side and southeast corner. Almost all the
gulls were "Ringers," with a few California and Herring Gulls. Glenn
spotted a possible Bonaparte's Gull tucked almost invisibly among
a dense flock of Ring-billed Gulls. Alas, no rare gulls could be found.
We ran into Don Beltz. He reiterated the field marks I mentioned
in my earlier post that favored Black-tailed Gull as the ID of the bird
he saw yesterday about mid-day. Additionally he mentioned that the mantle
color looked the same as on nearby Ring-billed Gulls, whereas BTGU
should have a darker mantle. He also thought that the black tail band
was more narrow than the broad band the field guides illustrate.
When searching the gulls at Cherry Creek, consider second cycle
Ring-billed Gulls, and if you see a Black-tailed Gull, please try to
get a photo and post to Cobirds asap. Thanks, Joe Roller, Denver
