Hello all,
Mike Henwood, Michael Kiessig and I birded various sites in Adams
County on February 15. Along the South Platte River, between 78th
and 88th, we found the Barrow’s Goldeneye on the river near the
green water tank. We saw three males and two females. After about half an hour,
the birds flew away from the river. There was also a rufous morph Red-tailed
Hawk in the same area.
We saw a dark morph Ferruginous Hawk in the area around 112th
and Tower Rd., south of Barr Lake. The
bird was first seen at the intersection of 112th and Himalaya, on
112th about a mile east of Tower Rd. This area has a large prairie
dog town. I have seen this bird at that site several times since mid-December.
The bird is quite tame and easily approachable, and as such provides an
excellent opportunity to see or photograph this magnificent but infrequently
seen
morph. After some time, the bird soared overhead and then landed to the west,
along 112th about half a mile west of Tower Road, so check there if
it can’t be found at 112th and Himalaya.
At Barr Lake, there was a dark or rufous morph Red-tailed Hawk, in the
area between the two parking lots, but the bird is very wary and skittish, and
hard to see well. On the lake, there was a very large gull. We saw it only from
a distance through heat waves, so we could not make a definite identification,
but it seemed to be a 1st or 2nd cycle Great Black-backed
Gull. The bird was in the area between the nature center (Niedrach
trail) and the gazebo.
