Cobirders,
This morning, I ventured 30 miles south of Las Animas to get acquainted
with the Ninaview block (Bent and Las Animas Counties) that I am doing
for the Colorado Breeding Atlas II. I heard Sandhill Cranes migrating
north from a hill within this block.
This afternoon, I stopped in at the west end of John Martin Reservoir
(Bent County). All the ice is now out, a sign that our short but
intensely cold winter here is over. I counted at least 14 American
Pelicans, and one Double-crested Cormorant, all spring migrants. The
number of migrant ducks and gulls has swelled into the thousands, while
the number of wintering diving ducks and Snow Geese is way down.
Happy spring!
