Foxy and I decided to take advantage of my day off yesterday and head east.

Kit Carson
Flagler SWA was the first stop. The only ducks on the lake were a small group
of Northern Shovelers that were then joined by a dozen fly in Lesser Scaup . On
the east shore a lone Brewer's Blackbird was making noise. Maybe to stand out
from the redwings and starlings. On the east side of the lake a Northern Shrike
was hanging out . Of notice on the Crystal Springs pond were Common Merganser,
Ring-necked Duck , and a surprise Ring-billed Gull on the drive back out. Also,
found a small flock of Mountain Bluebird on the Crystal Spring Ranch.

Cheyenne
Next we headed south to look for my nemesis Canada Goose. I was hoping to see
some migrating flocks heading north, but as I went south the winds picked up
from the north. No chance of anything flying north. North of Wild Horse I came
across a flock of Horned Larks that included a few Lapland Longspur giving good
looks by staying on the road. Good looks at Rough-legged Hawk , immature Golden
Eagle , American Kestrel , and Prairie Falcon along the drive are always a
welcome sight.

My final stop was the sewage pond in Cheyenne Wells where to my surprise I
finally came across two Canada Goose , yeah. Now to find one in Dolores County.

Lincoln
Heading east we set our GPS to Karva Res. SWA. Ten duck species were at Karval.
Drake Wood Duck , six drake Northern Pintail , Common Merganser , Canvasback ,
Redhead, Common Goldeneye, Ruddy Duck, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal , and Mallard
. Kinny Lake had no water fowl, but a flock of 100 American Tree Sparrow.
Driving back to the main road from Kinny mixed with a large flock of Horned
Larks what appeared to be a Mccown's Longspur , but it dropped below a clump of
dirt before I could get a positive identification.

Last was the usual flock of Wild Turkey south of Hugo.
