I know some Colorado birders, perhaps a few subscribed to COBirds, have
visited the Red Slough Wildlife Management Area in the recent past. It
is with the kind permission of the COBirds List Manager that I post the
announcement of the 2011 Red Slough Birding Festival.
The 2011 Red Slough Birding Convention is not far off. This years dates
for the convention will be May 7 - 10. The location is in Idabel,
McCurtain County, Oklahoma. Speakers this year will be Dr. Keith L.
Bildstein from Hawk Mountain who will be speaking on raptors, Greg
Lasley, Wildlife photographer fromTexas, who will be sharing his amazing
photography skills with us, and Dr. Chris Butler who will be talking
about his Yellow Rail research. There will be guided tours to the Red
Slough Wetlands, Little River NWR, and the McCurtain County Wilderness
Area. The past two conventions have both produced 150 species of
birds. If you want to see secretive marsh birds, Swainson's Warblers,
and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, you will not want to miss this event.
There will also be afternoon tours to see some of Oklahoma's Champion
Trees, wildflowers, butterflies, and dragonflies. There is also a
possibility this year of a post convention boat tour of Broken Bow Lake
to see an eagle's nest and to view the wilderness area from the water.
