While in Pueblo yesterday for an appointment I did a little birding at Lake
Minnequa, a smallish lake on the south side where the city has made some
improvements. I was pleased to see a juvenile Prairie Falcon perched in an
old cottonwood near some nice, albeit, small prairie area. There was a
small prairie-dog town there and after the Prairie Falcon was gone a male
American Kestral took up the watch. A few Western Meadowlarks were also
scattered around the sprawling new park area and some current Black-billed
Magpie nest were in evidence.

I stopped at Holcim Wetlands (CR120 east of Florence) where the heronry has
grown nicely in the past 2 weeks with 35-40 Great Blue Heron nests and (so
far) only 2 Double-crested Cormorant nests. At least 2 herons were on
eggs. A flock of about 65 Sandhill Cranes flew over, a large flock for
Fremont County. Photo of crane flyover and tonight's SuperMoon are on my

I checked Brush Hollow Reservoir--water level is high but no waterfowl or
even gulls.

Phoebes that look and sound like Black Phoebes (too many hybrid
BlackXEasterns to know without very close views) are moving along the
Arkansas River in Fremont County. I spotted one east of Florence several
days ago and then one at friend's property near Canon City today. I suspect
that these birds are overwintering in the area, likely near the several
locations that have warm water (including several hot springs) that would
support more insect food during cold months.

I haven't seen any Williamson's Sapsuckers or the Red-naped Sapsucker for
about a week--I believe they have migrated back up to their breeding areas.
